Improving fraud recovery: A quick Q&A with James Dodsworth

Introduction from James

JD: I’m James Dodsworth. I’m a Senior Manager at Thistle Initiatives. I’ve been working in fraud and financial crime for 24 years now.

I see myself almost as a desk-based Batman—without the substantial wealth and backing or small sidekick to help me. But essentially, it’s about fighting crime and solving problems. I don’t like the fact that fraudsters go around defrauding people, and innocent people are affected by this.

And likewise, I don’t want companies or the economy to suffer for it. And yes, I am a comic book fan as well, hence the Batman message.

What can we expect from Salv and Thistle’s APP fraud recovery webinar?

JD: So I’m really looking forward to this webinar. I think it’s taken a slightly different approach to all the other APP materials that are out there at the moment in terms of the APP fraud reimbursement scheme. And that’s because we’re going to be talking about the recovery element of it.

So there’s been a lot of discussion around how to prepare for APP reinvestment.

Have you got the tools and the systems in place? Have you got the manpower? But not many people have got to the far end of the process, which is, okay, but what about the recovery?

So part of this is you have fraudulent monies moving around. Have you got everything you need in place in order to be able to pull that money back and recover it and give us some real thought to that? So I think we’ll have some really interesting discussions about different tools and systems and methodologies surrounding this that maybe people haven’t considered yet.

Can you give us a teaser of what you’ll cover at the event?

JD: We’ll think about how to approach [APP fraud recovery] operationally.

Have you got the people in place to process these reimbursements to get the recovery amounts going back? Are you looking at genuine claims? Is it recoverable?

And also the sort of timeframe and the process related to it. There’s going to be a lot of learning on the spot for firms in relation to this and being prepared as much as you can will help alleviate some of that and hopefully increase your recovery rates as well, which ultimately is what we want to help advise people on.
